What are Chiropractic treatments?

Chiropractic treatments, also called chiropractic adjustments, are non-invasive procedures in which a chiropractor uses a safe amount of pressure directly on the misaligned area of your spine and other joints of the body. This adjustment relieves the pressure on the joint and surrounding nerves, and most importantly, allows your spine to return to its proper position.

When performing chiropractic treatments, chiropractors focus on discovering the root cause of the problem instead of only addressing the symptoms. Treatments are focused on increasing your overall well-being.

What are the different types of treatment?

There are different ways a chiropractor can care for you, depending on your condition. Generally, there are three levels of care, but for most people, the focus is on immediate relief. Your chiropractor will work with you to identify the best type and frequency of treatment.

  • RELIEF CARE is provided for immediate pain and discomfort. Depending on the diagnosis, your age and physical condition, one visit or many chiropractic adjustments over a relatively short period of time may be necessary.
  • CORRECTIVE CARE treats long-term spinal problems. Because these problems have existed for some time, they require a longer, more complex period of chiropractic care, which may include a customized exercise program.
  • SUPPORTIVE OR MAINTENANCE CARE helps you maintain and enjoy the benefits you’ve achieved from relief and corrective care. Continuing to work with your chiropractor and having adjustments once in a while will keep your spine as healthy as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Chiropractors Trained?
Chiropractors are required to complete a minimum of three years of university, followed by four years at an accredited chiropractic college. Chiropractic students receive over 4,500 hours of education, including anatomy, neurology, physical assessment, patient management and hands-on clinical experience. Once students have completed their education, they must pass both provincial and national board exams to earn the right to practice as a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC).
What’s special about Complete Wellness Clinic Chiropractors?

  • Diversified chiropractic joint manipulation
  • Activator methods
  • Drop-table and low-force techniques
  • Non-force techniques
  • ART (active release technique, certified in Spine, 2001)
Are chiropractic adjustments safe?
In Canada, over 120,000 individuals experience the benefits of chiropractic care every day. Chiropractic is a highly skilled, safe and effective treatment performed by highly trained professionals. It’s hands-on treatment that can be performed on infants, children, adults, seniors and pregnant women. We treat your pain by addressing the cause, not the symptoms. It’s safe, simple, and it works!
Can chiropractic adjustments increase mobility?
Yes. Vertebrae, the bones in your back, are connected by tissues and work together, allowing movement to occur, while protecting your spinal cord. When all the joints are moving well, your spine is strong and flexible. When accidents, injury or pressure cause your vertebrae to shift out of their alignment that affects your range of motion and if left unaddressed, can lead to more serious conditions.
Are chiropractic adjustments painful?
Chiropractic joint manipulation, also referred to as an adjustment, is a treatment in which the chiropractor uses his or her hands to apply a very quick, precise, and safe amount of pressure directly on the problem area of your spine. This adjustment relieves the pressure on the joint and surrounding nerves, and most importantly, allows your spine to return to its proper position. The adjustment is not painful, and often provides immediate relief of your pain.

Meet our Guelph clinic Chiropractor, Doctor Todd Patterson

Dr. Patterson had been introduced to chiropractic at a young age as his father received chiropractic care to treat a rare arthritic disease and benefited first hand from chiropractic care throughout his athletic career. Dr. Todd enrolled at New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) where he excelled and was named to the dean’s list throughout his program and was awarded a number of scholarships. He was trained in diversified, Cox technique and pursued further training to become certified in Active Release Technique (ART) and in acupuncture through the McMaster Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Programme.

In spite of the demanding academic schedule at NYCC, Dr. Todd was an executive member of the Sports Science and Human Performance Club. This club was responsible for organizing and providing chiropractic care to athletes in local and international events. Such events included the 2000 US Olympic 5Km Prequalifies.

Upon graduating from NYCC, Dr. Todd was hired by the largest clinical group in Massachusetts and was quickly promoted to its flagship clinic. Within this setting, he gained invaluable experience working in a multidisciplinary clinic alongside orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists. Though Dr. Todd found this position to be highly rewarding and educational, it was always his dream to return to Canada and open a multi-disciplinary clinic of his own.

Complete Wellness Clinic Guelph was founded in 2005 and has been steadily growing while providing quality care to the Guelph community. Dr. Patterson held a position at Medix College for 3 years teaching anatomy, physiology, and pathology within the massage therapy programme. For 4 years, Dr. Patterson held the position of team doctor with the Junior B Guelph hockey team (Dominators and Hurricanes) where he treated a variety of sports injuries throughout the season. A dedicated father of two children, Dr. Patterson continues to grow both professionally and personally and continues to thoroughly enjoy having the privilege of treating members of the Guelph community with individualized, quality care.
