After 6 months of bitter cold and long winter months, it seems that the summer weather we have all been waiting for is finally here!  Walking around in shorts and sandals is a very nice change from being all bundled up head to toe in long coats, hats and scarves.

While we embrace enjoying the outdoors in this beautiful weather, it comes with great concern to protect ourselves from the sun, especially the UV rays. July is Ultra Violet safety month and we would like to share some safety tips on how to protect ourselves while still enjoying the sunny days ahead.

UV rays are a type of radiation that come from the sun and can be very damaging to one’s health.   UV rays can cause skin cancers, skin aging, eye cataracts and sunburns. The amount of UV that you receive depends on the strength of the sun. During the spring and summer, the UV Index is available to you in your weather forecast.

To protect your skin appropriately, make sure to especially protect your skin when the UV index is 3 or higher.  Also be aware that you need to exercise the most caution when in the sun between 11:00am-3:00pm and even when it’s cloudy.

You can protect yourself while you are out enjoying these beautiful summer days by:

  • Applying sunscreen generously and reapplying accordingly, preferably with brands that are labelled “broad spectrum” and with an SPF of at least 30.
  • Wearing clothing that covers up, hats, sunglasses, sun protective clothing etc…
  • Seeking shade
  • Avoid getting sunburned

I hope these tips on staying safe in the sun will encourage you to protect yourself while having fun in the sun!
